SMART Team Wins at State Tournament! On December 11, 2005, the SMART team went to Central Connecticut State University in New Britain to compete in the Connecticut State FIRST Lego League Competition! The competition was tough, but a lot of fun. Overall, it was an amazing experience. While two of our team members went up to the mission board, the rest of the team cheered; and our robot-operators, though rather nervous, felt very encouraged. Our robot, Sub Wall-y, did well, although we had a problem with the pipeline flags on our first go. At noon we were solidly in 4th place. But we knew we could do better. In fact we were even trying to make one last mission work that day! Our next round was a success. Everything we planned on worked (well, except the one we weren't quite able to finish), and we achieved our top score for the day. We didn't know it at the time, but that put us in first place! The research presentation also went very well. All our hard work paid
off, and there wasn't a question we didn't feel good about answering.
The judges said they would never look at Pearls the same way again. During the awards' ceremony, we were sitting on the bleachers among our fellow FLL competitors: all eagerly awaiting the judges' decisions. That day of the CT State Competition, the SMART team won four awards. We received second place in both Research Presentation and Robust Programming. The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), a sponsor of our state competition, awarded us the IEEE Director's Award, with a $200 prize! In what felt like both an instant and an eternity, the judges began to announce the First Place Winner of the Director's Award. When they announced that Team #1, the S.M.A.R.T team, had won the Director's Award, we all exploded with happiness! We were going to Atlanta! For the second year in a row, we will be representing Connecticut at the World Festival in April! Wish us luck!
