SMART Team Wins 3 Award in Atlanta! The S.M.A.R.T. team came home with 3 Awards from the 2006 FLL World Festival held in Atlanta, Georgia on April 27-29. Please check back soon as we will be posting stories and pictures to commemorate and share our experience with the world. Teamwork Award - 1st Place Teamwork is necessary to succeed in FIRST LEGO League, and is the key ingredient in any team. This award is presented to the team that best demonstrates extraordinary enthusiasm and spirit, exceptional partnership, the utmost respect to their own teammates, and support and encouragement of fellow teams. The teamwork award is one of the 4 pillars of the FLL competition. Only teams that can consistently demonstrate their ability to work together as a team to accomplish their goals are considered for this award. We were proud to be selected 1st place in this category. Young Coach/Adult Mentor Award - Mallika Winsor, S.M.A.R.T. Team This award is presented to the young adult (high school through college) coach/mentor, whose impact and inspiration, devotion, guidance, and support were most clearly evident in the teams discussion with the judges. Mallika Winsor, in addition to mentoring the SMART FLL team was also a coach of the SMARTYS JFLL team. She was instrumental in keeping this program alive at her school. This was clear in the team's conversations with the judges and she was honored with this award. GRACIOUS PROFESSIONALISM Award AN FLL CORE VALUE Dr. Woodie Flowers, National Advisor for FIRST, speaks about this value and says, "The FIRST spirit encourages doing high-quality, well informed work in a manner that leaves everyone feeling valued. Gracious professionalism seems to be a good descriptor for part of the ethos of FIRST. It is part of what makes FIRST different and wonderful." Team's that achieved this award were identified by both their peers and the judges as being exemplars of the Gracious Professionalism spirit. Robot Performance Although we didn't achieve a robot award, our robot was very impressive to the judges and referees. Our robot achieved a high score of 390 out of 400 at the competition which placed us 6th overall (out of 82 teams) at the competition. In the alliance challenge, our alliance (which included Jet-Net from Holland, TechnoGirls from NY, and TechnoBots from Alaska) scored 5th place achieving all the missions we tried save one.
